membrane sweep

Looking for first hand experiences from moms who have had their membranes stripped. The good, the bad, and the ugly. I told my doc I didn't want to be induced again (using pitocin etc. I am aware a membrane sweep is technically a form of induction) and she offered to start doing membrane sweeps at 38 weeks (which is this week for me).

I am really happy they did it to me, it did hurt and even made my baby jump up into me, but I was 41 weeks pregnant and did not want to be induced, my appointment was at about 11am and that night I slept maybe 3 hours because my mucus plug came out and I had him the next morning. I had been walking, excersizing, everything and nothing worked until I had that done 😊 good luck! Don't be afraid! It might hurt momentarily but it's better than being induced and being in pain for 12+ hours with no progression!

Were you already dilated at all before they did it?

Yeah I've noticed when I make long trips to the store or do quite a bit of walking l contractions start to kick in already and then settle down when I stop

EBBirth.com has the evidence on it. Here's what they found but if you go to the site you can read about the potential complications and everything in between. "Now there have been a lot of randomized trials on membrane sweepings, and what they show are the benefits are: If your membranes are stripped or swept at 41 weeks, so one week after your estimated due date, this can lower your chance of having to go past 42 weeks and needing an induction at 42 weeks. It decreases your chances of going to 42 weeks from 41% down to 23%. It pretty much cuts your chance in half of having what we call a post-term pregnancy or a pregnancy that goes past 42 weeks. It can also decrease the length of your pregnancy by one to four days. Most studies found four days on average. That doesn’t mean that you’ll go into labor within four days. What it means is, say, your body was naturally going to go into spontaneous labor at 41 weeks. Then, instead, if your membranes were stripped, it would shorten your pregnancy by about four days. Maybe you would go into labor at 40 weeks and three days instead of 41 weeks."

They've got great stuff on their website.

I watched that video the other day. I'm all for evidence based practice (I'm a nurse, although ob is not my field). I found some of that to be pretty interesting for sure. Thank you!

Painless and quick like a cervical smear. Was already in labour and 5cm so I can't tell if it helped.

Kinda hurt, over fast but didn't do anything for me. I had it done twice and just made me lose some of my mucus plug

It's different for everyone. I would say try it once and start walking a lot afterwards. It might help

That's kind of what I'm afraid of, it not doing anything at all
