Irregardless– is it a word?

The title is pretty self explanatory. Labeled nonstandard in dictionaries, it's synonymous with regardless. I personally can't get behind it 😬 the double negative makes me cringe.

Regardless if it's a word or not people still use it and ain't as if they are words. 
As annoying as it can be to hear this and other words, it's usually best to politely overlook someone's grammatical errors unless have asked for your help with their speech. 😉

It is indeed a word... it's just the non standard form of the word, regardless. But, it means the same thing as regardless. Some say it's a blend of the word, "irrespective," and, "regard," which means not taking something into account or regard... it is a double negative, and a synonym for, "regard." It can be traced back to the early 19th century when it became popular... as far as English dialect is concerned, mainly through speech and prose, and all that jazz. So.... I just use the word, "regardless." Sounds better...

I'm a linguistics student and it is definitely not a proper word! However non-standard vocabulary becomes standardised through time with more frequent use so you never know, it may become more standardised and less stigmatised in the future!
