Should servers have to claim tips?

It's not particularly controversial. But it came from a conversation with a friend and I'm genuinely curious on your thoughts. If you're a server, do you claim them?

In the USA you are asked about your income, don't lie about it. Pay what you owe, use and might need to use one day, like the rest of us.

Yes why should everyone else have to claim all their income but servers don't. A huge portion of their pay is tips. I would get a paycheck of $92 but get $500 a week in tips. Should I be allowed to only claim$92?

All tips are supposed to be and SHOULD be claimed, cash or not. They even include it on the tax forms you have to fill out when filing at the end of the year, it says "Wages, salaries, tips, etc.".

"Several years ago, it was estimated that waiters and waitresses who received tips failed to report billions worth of income to the IRS over a multi-year period. Despite increased efforts from the IRS to crack down on the hospitality industry, it remains an easy tax item to fudge.

In fact, the IRS imposes specific penalties for not reporting tips, subjecting guilty parties to a penalty equal to 50 percent of the Social Security, Medicare, additional Medicare and railroad retirement taxes you owe on unreported tips. Well in Canada we have to claim our tips. However when it comes to my maternity leave my tips that I claim as my income every year are not added into my earnings. So therefore only my paychecks counted for maternity leave which I think is so stupid. I personally feel like if I'm paying taxes on them then they should be included in my total income for government related pay as well.

Especially since the majority of a servers income is tips.
Why shouldn't have have to pay taxes on their income when I pay on mine?

Yes, we always had to claim all of our credit card tips and at least 10% of our cash tips. It dosernt matter what you do you still need to pay your taxes and ss just like everyone else so that one day you can use those programs as they were designed to be used.

It is income, and income is federally taxed in the U.S., so of course. Taxes go towards infrastructure that you use and services/programs you will likely need or want at some point. Pay your share like the rest of us.
