What does % mean?

Question

Birth control is known to have different %'s of efficacy. But what does that mean?

If I use a method with 98% efficacy, does it mean that if I use that method 100 times, then 2 pregnancies are may result, or does it mean that out of 100 women who use that method over a year 2 get pregnant?

Also, is whatever the answer is is the same for the %fertility rate down on glow app when not using contraception?

Can you times the first by the second (so using a 98%effective method at a time when you are 10% fertile will give you a .2% chance of pregnancy?

I understand that it will be different for each individual but I am interested in what the numbers actually mean.

Answer

Out of 100 women that use that method PERFECTLY, 2 of them will get pregnant  (if it is 98%). The pregnancy percentages listed on glow are the % chance you have of conceiving without protection. If you are using a contraceptive, the chance of you conceiving is 100-98 (or whatever % your contraceptive is). The number is not multiplied by anything.  As long as you perfectly use a contraceptive method that is 98% effective, you will always have a 2% chance of getting pregnant.

If it is 98% efficient, then that means 98 out of every 100 women have used it effectively, meaning that 2 out of every 100 have not, BUT that is an estimation. 20 out of every 1000 (or 2 out of every 100) don't really get pregnant if it is used correctly.
