how long does it take for an egg to fertilize after unprotected sex??

So I'm looking to conceive in August, so that hopefully I would have a May baby... when should I start trying, late July? Or August... let's say once I have unprotected sex would a sperm reach an egg and fertilize right away? 
I'm a bit confused about the process... according to my calendar, I'm going to get my PD last week of July and ovulate mid-late August...

You'll want to bd when you ovulate in August. Track using opks and when you get a positive surge, then you have unprotected sex within 24 hours of the positive test. Then it would take about 6-10 days for implantation to take place & a few days after that for hcg to show on a test.

If you want to get pregnant in August then you need to have sex in August lol. It only takes 45 minutes to an hour for sperm to reach the egg, the slowest sperm taking up to 12 hours. That's IF you have sex on ovulation day. If you're not ovulating, sperm can survive up to 7 days inside of you leading up to ovulation. But that's only in perfect conditions, the majority of sperm will die after a day or two. Then it takes another 6-12 days for the fertilized egg to implant in the uterus.

I would start tracking ovulation now so when August comes around you know when. It took two months for us to get pregnant because we had sex the day I ovulated. Next month we had sex the day before and boom pregnant.
