Is it common that you both go below the belt when arguing?

My ex did this to me every time we fought and it destroyed our relationship and made me resent him in a way I've never felt. I think it's the worst thing you can do in an argument.

I've been called a bitch by him. Which was fair, I think I was being way worse 😂 but we also have a relationship where we call each other out on our shit and don't get offended. If he tells me I'm being a bitch, I always am. If I tell him he's being an asshole, he is.

My boyfriend and I have been together 2 years now and have been in plenty of arguments. Neither of us have EVER called the other a mean name or said something to intentionally hurt the other person. Because we love and respect each other.

I guess the way I see it, if you truly love someone, you would never intentionally do anything to hurt him/her. There have been a couple times where I'm tempted to call my boyfriend an asshole or say something mean when we're fighting but I don't because even if I'm mad at him, the absolute last thing I'd want to do is hurt him. The same goes for him. If he ever insulted me or intentionally tried to hurt me, I know I would have a hard time ever trusting him again and I would begin to doubt he actually loves me as much as he says he does (if he really loves me so much, how could he intentionally hurt me?). Maybe we're the only people who feel that way but we've been together for 2 1/2 years and we've never had a big fight, just occasional disagreements. I think this is because we never let it escalate to the point of it being a big fight.
When you stay respectful of the other person, it's easier to actually sit down and work out your differences because you're not focusing on the terrible thing the other person said. Instead, you can focus more on understanding where they're coming from and finding a solution. Plus, being hurt like that stays with you even after you've "resolved" things and again, it's because you shouldn't actively try to hurt the people you love. It hurts the relationship in an irreparable way when you do.

It's not horrible, but one day I was having really bad anxiety and I was on fb on my laptop, I went to message him and it said he had just become friends with some girl so all I did was simply ask him about it (he has given me a reason to have shaken trust in the past with a girl that's a friend of his) and it escalated a little because when I'm anxious it tends too because I'll overthink things and he said "is that seriously a good idea to sit around and look for shit to be worked up over?"
So not HORRIBLE but he did say it in a kinda nasty way
