It is a very strong form of pain management.  They insert a needle in your spine and it deadens your nerves.  It is used for alot of things but most often it is used during labor.

They use a needle and put a little catheter in your back (like they do in your arm) then through the catheter, the pain medicine (numbing agent) blocks the pain signal in all the nerves below that point. It's a little uncomfortable when they first put it in, but then you won't feel a thing where it was placed and below that will also be numb.
