My husband and I broke up when we had been dating for 3 months. We got back together and have been together ever since. It really depends on what you broke up for and how all parties acted in the situation

Me and my fiancé dated for about a year and a half before we broke up. We had both just moved away from home and went to different colleges 3 hours away. It was a lot of stress on our relationship so we decided to break it off. After dating other people and experiencing life without each other, we decided to get back together and try long distance. We both knew we belonged together. Long distance is so hard but it's so worth it. Here we are 3 years later. He has one semester left and I'm currently looking at med schools, so the light at the end of the tunnel is closer and more vibrant than ever.

I do have a couple tips about going back to an old relationship because it rarely works out for everybody. 
1. Put everything out on the table right away about who you dated, hookups you've had, people you're talking to, etc. It will put a lot less strain on the relationship in the future
2. DO NOT HOLD ANYTHING AGAINST THE OTHER PERSON THAT THEY DID WHEN YOU WERE SEPARATED!! I cannot express this enough. You two were broken up and you were both free to do whatever. 
3. Don't rush into things. I know it's tempting because they are so familiar and you're eager to be with them again, but treat it like a new relationship. Relearn their habits, relearn their scent (sounds weird but I had to do it) and relearn what it feels like to be around them. 
4. Do not bring up negatives and mistakes from the past
5. Love them with your full intensity. Learn from the mistake you made before and never let them go again.

It completely depends on why you broke up. My boyfriend and I broke up when we'd been together just under a year because I was moving across the country. We never had any problems in our relationship, it was simply that I had to move to follow my dreams and he wasn't ready to commit to 4yrs long distance. We got back together after about 6 months. We've been together for the last almost 4yrs and still the only fight we've ever had is when we were broken up about how I was struggling with the break up. 
We never stopped loving, trusting or respecting each other. And now I'd say our relationship is stronger because of that break up. We both know how horrible it is for us to be apart so we work hard to keep us together. We have excellent communication and event though is hard being LDR so often we're happy and have an incredible relationship that is stronger than many others I know. 
The trick is that when we got back together we had a very serious conversation about how this time would be different. We talked about the break up, our time apart, how we would communicate and visit, etc. But the big one and most important topic was why he was now ready to commit to me completely and that he wouldn't just leave without really trying to make us work. We make it work. Since then I've never questioned his loyalty or commitment. Not once. And that is why we've lasted. No we haven't come close to forever yet, but we're talking about getting married, he's going to be moving to be with me in a few months so the distance is finally being closed for good and I truly believe we'll make it to forever. He's my best friend and I'm his. 
Break ups can be solved. But it isn't too common. If you can truly make the reason you broke up a non-issue, still have a lot of love, trust and respect then it's very possible.
