Crib bumpers?

Was anyone totally against crib bumpers but ended up using them? My almost 9 month old hits his head on the side all night long and I'll hear him whimper or sometimes it completely wakes him up. I've tried the mesh kind but that doesn't really pad it at all. Any thoughts on safety once they're crawling and pulling up to stand??

Personally I was too paranoid to use bumpers for any of my children, even the mesh ones. My daughter got her leg stuck once or twice before she figured out how to get herself out, luckily. Once they start to pull to stand, they can use it to climb on top of, so now you have to worry about a fall risk as well as suffocation. To me it's not worth it.

Following! My chunky monkey keeps bumping her head when she is standing up and the other night got her leg stuck at 4am.
