can we ask for a dilation check?

i asked my doctor if they do dilation checks and she said no because theres no point in doing them. but i had some labor signs a week ago and wasnt able to see doctor weekly visit, so im worried. i also had lots of braxton hicks contractions and pain down there. im 37 weeks now and when i see dr for next visit, ill be 38 weeks.

My doctor does them at every appointment and I prefer that! I like to know what's going on down there.

At the practice I see they only do it if you ask. I was told the reason is that it doesn't tell you much- you can be 4cm dilated for weeks, or you could be 1cm dilated and then have the baby that day. And it increases risk of infection. I was checked at 36 weeks; and then requested it again 38 weeks (39 now). There was no change between the two despite pretty intense prodromal labor symptoms. I personally won't ask again until 40 weeks- but that's because I'm anxious and a control freak and I just need to know what's going on down there (even if it isn't indicative of how soon labor may begin).

Your doctor is right, there is no reason for them. They're not an indication of how near/far labor is.

They do checks from 36 weeks and every week after that at my doctor. But if u want her to check u should tell her.

There's nothing to be worried about. My first cervix check will be when I'm 40w1d (next Thursday ). It doesn't really matter how many cm you're dilated before you go into active labor. Most doctors consider full term starting at 37 weeks.

i was in early labor for 2 weeks full on contractions. was 1cm the whole time. they only check if you go to the hospital where i was they saif it eans nothing
