How to pick your child's god mother and father?

What are or was your criteria for picking your child's god mother and father?

Their faith in God and how much I could trust/rely on them. 
The way I see it is, God forbid if my husband and I randomly passed away and no one in our family were able adopt our kids, we would like for the Godparents to be able to adopt our kids. So we would want some he has similar parenting styles as us and has a strong faith in God.

We are not religious so don't plan to baptise/christen our child but we have been discussing who we would like to have legal guardianship if anything were to happen to us. 
We talked about relationship stability. Financial security. Life style. Moral beliefs. And age. 
I think the criteria is different for everyone. You need to think about what the important issues are for you and your SO :)

Let's clarify: godparents in the religious sense have no weight on who would raise your child if something happened to you. That would take a legal document. If you want them to be the same people then great! Just make sure you have a power of attorney, will, trust, etc. that says so.

It depends what you mean when you say "godparent". Is it in the religious sense or who will be taking care of your kids if something were to happen?

I'm catholic and the godparents also have to be. This time I picked family members as we attend church together and they will also be good role models. 
Last time I picked one catholic godparent and 3 non Catholics, I was young. Needless to say I don't speak to any of them and my son has no relationship with any of them either.

We chose my little sister, I know she would raise my daughter with good morals, she would teach her the right things to do, she would make sure she did good in school, she would Keep God in her life, and she's going to school to be an engineer so I know she will be well taken care of financially.
