What does a godparent do?

People keep using the word godparent. I do not think it means what they think it means.

Their ultimate duty is to see that they are raised in their faith.   I personally believe if they are a married couple,  if something happens to the parents that is who would take care of them.   But my childrens god parents won't be married  so the 2nd part doesnt apply to me

If something happens to the parents and all the kids relatives you'd be next in line to receive the kid (I'm preeeeettty sure so correct me if I'm wrong)

Godparents are supposed to guide the child in their faith, hence the God in godparents.

It depends on the parents. I know some who expected the God parents to bring their child to God (be leaders of their faith), some who expected them to take over if something happened to them, and some who just want to honor a family member or friend who they love. 
    
The origin from what I remember began as adults to have a sponsor when Christianity was persecuted. Almost like an AA sponsor who would keep you on the straight and narrow, the God parent/sponsor did the same. 
   
After Christianity became legal, they were the ones who vouched for people who wanted to be baptized. That was when many pagans were being baptized and it was part of the completion of transition to faith. 
   
When adult baptism became less frequent (around the Middle Ages) two people male and female would stand as parents for children. Late Middle Ages established this as more of the normal practice of having 2 people help lead a child to faith, or take over when parents weren't able.

Well God is the key word here I think...a Godparent, is supposed to help spiritually guide a child in their faith. That's my take on it anyway..

It is who helps guide your child down the road of the religion he or she was baptized in.
In my religion we also have godparents for our marriage.  These are the people who support our marriage and help us during difficult times to keep reminding us of our faith.

If you have a non family member as a God parent and it's because you want them to take over care of your child if something happens to you, I think you need to write it in a will. Children will be given to family first

Well I'm pretty sure it's meant to be someone who would take the kids if something happened to the parents, but tbh I don't see my godparent as that person?? 😂 I really don't think my parents would've actually wanted her taking us, especially as a single mother with kids of her own so maybe it means different things in different places? I never thought to ask though.

My godparents live quite far away. If my parents were to die, my godparents would take care of me. However now I'm a legal adult so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
