Miscarriage or regular period? TMI

So my period came today although it wasn't due until Friday. I've always had heavy/ painful periods but today was exceptional. I work nights and try to get a nap in before starting my shift at 11pm. I fell asleep around 7:30/8pm and woke up at 10:30 to a pool of blood and clots. So much so that my 10hr overnight pad could absorb anymore. I was running late so I put on a fresh pad and left. An hour into my shift I went to the bathroom to check on things and another descent sized clot with a good amount of blood. It's not saturated but I think it's a lot considering I only had the pad on for two hours. I heard that miscarriages are characterized by painful cramping blood and clots please let me know what you think. Thanks
