Labor?

On my hour drive home from work, I experienced 8 contractions approximately 7-8 minutes apart. They were like painful menstrual cramps but not to the point of where I had to stop what I was doing just to get through one. I've been home for at least 20 minutes and they've stopped. What does this mean? I've had consistent contractions before but not that many and no where near that painful. Mind you I'm an hour away from the hospital so I really don't know what to do. I'm walking now outside my house to see if they will continue.
