Can you request an ultrasound?

Does anyone have experience asking for an ultrasound? 
I had my first one at 6 weeks when it was just a little spec and I was told I don't get another one until 20 weeks. My 12 week appt is next week, and I'd love to see that little nugget again!

you would most likely have to pay. as they usually schedule according to insurance. however (not sure where you are either) you can go to a third party ultrasound place and pay for one and the ultrasounds are usually much longer when you do it this way

Doctors don't do ultrasounds on request, but you could go to an independent ultrasound location and pay for one.

You don't get more than 3 or 4 ultrasounds unless medically necessary. I had one every week from 26-37 weeks pregnant for medical reasons, total overkill and harmful for baby. You can pay out of pocket for one at a off location place or call your office a head of time and tell them you'd like one and are willing to pay for it.

Your insurance won't cover it so you will have to pay for it. You may get one if it's medically necessary. At that time they couldn't find the baby's heartbeat on the Doppler so they did a quick ultrasound to make sure she was ok.

I had an early scan at 7 weeks to confirm the pregnancy and be released from my fertility clinic.   I had my first OB appointment at 11 weeks, had the MaterniT21 blood test done and got to hear my little one's heartbeat but no ultrasound.   Since my blood test came back clear (thank goodness!) my next medical scan was scheduled for 19 weeks.   
I felt a little cheated because I wanted the cute baby-like ultrasound picture and wasn't going to have that when I started telling people about my little girl.   I'm also a wicked worrier and waiting a month between OB appointments to know my little one is OK was torturous, so I searched in my area, and found a studio that does 3d ultrasounds.   They also offered a "First Peek" 2d ultrasound for $45. I got to see my little girl moving around, hear her heartbeat, and got a bunch of pictures.  It was non-diagnostic but it put my mind at ease seeing her.  Maybe you can look into doing something like that.

Are you in the US? You can always ask, but insurance may not cover it if they don't deem it as "medically necessary." If your provider says they won't do it because insurance won't cover it you can offer to sign a waiver stating you know the possible cost. Just an idea!

I had my first one done at 7w5d in office so at my 12 week appointment I asked if I could see the baby again because my doctor has this portable machine so it wasn't like an official ultrasound but he let me see (: I had my NT scan at 14 weeks which was my first real ultrasound where I got multiple pictures and it took place in a separate building of the hospital~ but

it was nice to get this quick little picture and see how much baby changed
