When should you start seeing a gyno?

I'm 17, I live with my mum, she's never said anything about going to one and I don't really go to a doctor's for regular check-ups, so no one has said anything to me about it, but I know you're supposed to have regular appointments. Should I talk to my mum about it or wait?

Are you sexually active? If so you should go once a year. If you have multiple partners its best to get checked every few months.
Other reasons for going, at this age, would be irregular periods. 
(Im sure there is more i cant think of at the moment, but a doctors visit never hurts! Even to ask about how often they want you to come in for a physical and other tests)
