Had modern medicine made us cruel?
The other day I saw a photo of a little boy who was 3 years old and had spent almost his entire life in a medically induced coma hooked up to machines. When he wasn't in a medically induced coma he was kept sedated so he wouldn't unplug everything he was attached too. He had wires in him everywhere. He couldn't be held, he was blind and deaf, he suffered from lung trouble, organ failure, brain issues, heart issues, inability to walk or control motor function, etc. he will never walk, talk, laugh, breathe on his own, never hear his mothers voice or see her face, he will never go to school or meet his siblings, he will spend his entire life hooked up to machines in a hospital without ever seeing the outside or breathing fresh air. I want to cry when I think of everything he will miss out on. His entire existence will consist of him being confined to bed, hooked up to machines just to keep him alive. More and more I see stories like this. Children whose bodies can't survive without machines. Children who will never talk, walk, smile, or understand any part of life because of unfortunate accidents that happened, like the girl who was pronounced brain dead after tonsil surgery, or children that were born with severe defects. I can't help but think how cruel it is that we let them suffer and spend their whole lives bound to a bed unable to communicate or move. I'm not saying let them suffer or harm anyone by any means but I have to wonder, has modern medicine made us cruel? So that we prolong someone's suffering because we aren't ready to let go. What are you're thoughts? I personally don't know what I would do when faced with such a situation. I don't know if I would say let's keep them pain free and let them pass peacefully if there is truly no way to help them or keep them going because every life is precious and we shouldn't be given the right to end it.
