I'd ask him to pick one out together. If its for him he should get to pick in my opinion. It's a big responsibility and he should agree to it especially if he'll be taking care of it

One of my sisters has a Yorkie. The other sister has a Labradoodle. The Yorkie is better if you want a little dog to cuddle you and bark a lot, the Labradoodle is good if you want a patient, sweet dog that is great with kids. I find the Yorkie is not great with kids, and can be snappy with them.
