Any suggestions welcome! πŸ˜•

Kayla β€’ Married & we had our perfect baby boy on 03/21/2015, Pierce Huntlee. He was 7lbs 10oz, & 19.5 in πŸ’™
My son will be 4 weeks Saturday. He hit a growth spurt at 2 weeks and I couldn't fill him up, hurt my feelings not seeing him satisfied so I started supplementing. Also I had mastitis in my right good so it was too sore to nurse for 5 days, but I pumped it and still nursed on the left side. Anyways, I'm still nursing pretty much every feeding but he gets formula afterward because he's still hungry. He only nurses 5-10 minutes on each side and pretty much empties me. When I pump I only get an ounce to an ounce and a half on my right side and sometimes two on my left. Obviously that's not enough for him. Just wondering if there's anything I can do to get my supply back. Fenugreek made me sick, and I didn't notice a difference, and I don't like oatmeal! Anything else, or is this probably how it's going to be. Baby boy is having a terrible time with formula & I feel guilty! πŸ˜•

Pumping is not an indicator or supply. Do not judge based off that. During Growth spurts, your body will adjust and make more...it just takes a day or so. Nursing frequently is the best way to keep up. Babies only need about 25 oz of milk a day so no need to supplement.

Kayla, the amount you pump is normal. Why don't you stop formula and breast feed every 2hrs or so? The more you feed, the more milk you will make. I try freezing some milk, which I then use during growth spurts instead  of supplementing with formula

Ps. No judgement or shame in supplementing with formula Kayla. I'm only trying to help you :) you have to do what is best for you and baby. Happy mum equals happy baby!

I had the same issue at the start. I use to pump right after each feed to stimulate milk production. I only use to manage to pump about 0.5oz in 20mins of pumping after a feed. After 10 days I started producing enough milk for baby

Eats on me, nurses, he only eats maybe 5 minutes each side, and when he pulls off I try and see if I still have some milk and it's hardly any I can express. When he gets off though he's still hungry. He eats 4-5 oz a feeding, over an hour or so. How can I compare to that?

Your pump output is actually normal! Normal range is 1/2 oz to 2 oz combined. 😊 I felt better when I was told that and realized I was actually producing more than the average woman. Also, as mentioned, pump output doesn't indicate how much baby is getting at the breast. Babies are much more efficient than pumps. The very best way to increase supply is to nurse nurse nurse. It's all about supply and demand. The more you nurse, the more your body will make. Keep in mind too that EBF babies do not increase their intake as they grow like formula fed babies do. An EBF baby when taking a bottle should take between 1 to 1.5 oz (I believe this is correct, check KellyMom to confirm, I know the low number is right) per hour. So if he feeds every 2 hours, 2-3 oz is probably enough for him. Breast milk changes composition as baby grows so that they don't need more. Keep it up, you're doing great momma! Just be confident in your body. If you feel the need to supplement, that is your decision, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. But, I think you're doing better than you believe you are. 😊

Yeah supplementing is a slippery slope unfortunately. Hopefully you can wean from supplementing and it will get easier for you!

Thank you. I wish I would have never started supplementing bc now I really can't fill him up. He eats on me, both sides, which combined isn't 5-10 minutes, and then he'll eat 2,3,4 ounces of formula.

Sadie is right! I pumped exclusively for a few days and I pump anywhere from 5-12oz at a session. But I also still mainly pump now with a few breastfeeds here and there. Trying just pumpin at least 8 times a day and see what happens. Or try pumping after breastfeeding and make sure you drain your breast as much as possible. Hand express after pumping to get every drop. The more you get out the more the body makes.

I would only do it for a few days to get your supply up. Than go back to breasts. We ended up going back to breasts and everything was great. I have a strong let down so I think that's why little man gets mad sometimes while breastfeeding. So I pick moments I know he will breastfeed to nurse.

Thanks for insight, but honestly it would break my heart to only pump, I love the bonding time.

Keep in mind that just because he is eating more formula when he is done nursing, it doesn't mean that he is still hungry. Babies that age will eat because they like to suckle. Your pump output is fantastic considering he is only 4 weeks! I would just stop feeding formula. It might be hard to trust your body at first, but I really think that you are producing just fine. Also, it might seem like the breast is empty, but it's almost impossible to fully empty a breast. Let him nurse as long as he will. If he still seems hungry, hold off for a half hour or so and try to nurse him again. I promise he will not starve. Just keep an eye on his diapers to make sure. If he is pooping and peeing regularly, he is getting everything he needs. You are doing great, momma. I'm very proud of you for doing what is best for your son.

Don't feel guilty! You're doing great :) anyways, I've heard amazing things about mothers milk tea, maybe you could try that! Obviously drink tons of water to stay hydrated, that will help your supply. I notice on days when I drink more water my supply is better. Something else I've read that is good for mothers with low supply is breast compressions, basically it helps to get the milk flowing faster, I use these sometimes when my son starts to fall asleep while nursing and I can tell that it works. You can read further about them on breastfeedinginc.ca and it'll explain it better than I can. Good luck! :)

I had the same problem. I quit breastfeeding & just strictly pumped for like two weeks. I pumped every two hours & it really helped to up my supply. I now make almost up to 3 oz per boob. I sometimes put him on my boob in the middle of the night if I fall asleep & forget to take a milk out the fridge.

Thank you, but I really love the bonding time with my son, If I had to strictly pump I don't feel it's worth it.
