Tips on dealing with conservative MIL...or any family?

I was so happy when I found this group! Didn't think there was a group I actually belonged in. Any ways, since all of you I'm sure have to deal with family about religion (or any social matters) with your new baby, any advice?

It so depends on your family and your relationship with them. My husband's family is super Catholic, and I'm an atheist. I didn't exactly broadcast it when we first started dating, but after we'd been together a while I was honest, and while I'm sure it disappointed them, they've never tried to change me. I'm sure they'll be disappointed that we're not baptizing the baby, but I doubt they'll make a thing out of it. It's harder when your family is less accepting. All I can say is be honest, consistent and kind (even if they're not kind to you). By staying firm, with time they will come to understand that your beliefs (or lack thereof) are non-negotiable and will hopefully stop trying to change that. But if you can be kind and understanding that for them, this is so important and difficult to accept, you can still preserve a close and loving relationship despite your differences.

This. Yes, I am too looking forward to dealing with this. Actually from my family too. It's just going to take one time. One time to voice their opinion when I didn't ask. One time to over step their bounds. They are going to get told very quickly. This is my child and my family. We do things differently than you, and that's okay. If we need advice, we will ask, but until then I'm going to ask that you respect our decisions as parents. If not, then I don't have a choice but to not include you in our family. Thanks.

My family is staunchly, piously catholic. My husband's family is apathetic-spiritual, but his grandmother is Southern Baptist. We decided to stay civil while firm with our decision not to baptize our children. They will have name days, learn all religions in their time, and when anyone comments unkindly we'll guide our children to have compassion for those who don't understand. Agree to disagree. My mother likes dousing people with holy water. My husband and I agree it's harmless as long as she uses a squirt gun.

My husbands family is super conservative. They are racist and religious and I just go in there knowing that they have COMPLETELY different beliefs from my husband and I and just try not to take any of their statements of judgements to heart. As long as your husband is on your side it makes it much easier.
