Period, birth control, and sex

So my periods have been a bit irregular lately and I've been experiencing spotting between my periods. I thought maybe I should take a break from my birth control because maybe they were messing with me. So I did not take my pill for a day or two. My bf and I might have sex for the first time this weekend, so I thought it was wise to start them again just to be safe. How long should I wait to have sex after starting the pill again???
