I AM LIVID
Warning: there will be foul language ahead.
So my husband broke a tooth years ago and saw a dentist about it. The dentist said if it wasn't causing him pain, it was fine (it was just a minor chip). Well, a few months ago, it started hurting him. Then it got bad He went to a dentist and found out he needed a root canal, and also had several cavities. Well, we went in for his root canal, and they numb him up and start drilling RIGHT AWAY. He's not even numb yet. They apologize and give it more time to take effect. Fine. Mistakes happen. I get it.
Fast forward to today. They numb him, and they're talking to him. He stumbles a bit on a word. Dentist asks "is your tongue starting to go numb?" My husband laughs and says yes. Dentist grabs the drill and says my husband should raise his hand if he needs him to stop. Doesn't test to see if he's numbed, just assumed that his whole tooth was numb because he stumbled a bit on a word. And he starts drilling. Immediately, my husband's ankles straighten. I can tell he's curling his toes. He starts twitching his hand. Then he raises it. And you know what the dentist says?
"Yeah. It's gonna hurt. It's because of the nerve."
AND HE FUCKING KEEPS GOING
AND MY WONDERFUL, GENTLE, FEARLESS, BRAVE HUSBAND, who sat there and watched the needles come at him without so much as a flinch, started shaking. He was fucking shaking. I'm so ashamed of myself. I should've spoken up, but I felt frozen. When they finished the tooth, my sweet, polite, never confrontational husband says with tears in his eyes and nail marks in his palms, "can we wait a bit before we start the next one?"
He. Wasn't. Fucking. Numb.
He told the dentist it hurt.
The dentist kept going.
He's so scared of the dentist now.
WHEN YOUR PATIENT TELLS YOU THEYRE IN PAIN, YOU FUCKING NUMB THEM MORE. THE DENTIST ADMITTED HE COULD HAVE GIVEN MORE NOVOCAINE OR WAITED. THERE WAS NO REASON FOR MY HUSBAND TO FEEL THAT MUCH OF A FUCKIG ROOT CANAL.
My heart hurts so bad right now. That's an image I'll never forget. I hate myself for not speaking up. And I hate the dentist for ignoring my husband's need for a break
