Checking Cervical Positions--Need help

Okay I've been reading all over here and on the internet and looked at tons of pictures but I am still confused on checking my cervix. I've felt it a few times before but I must be doing it wrong, or it's my very short fingers. I felt it tonight after my bath and it was firm and I think closed...kind of like a pointed tip, but it felt like I had to really feel way up in there to get to it. I'm supposed to be starting my period within a week. By what I've read it should be sitting low around this time. I know it will get easier the more I check but I'm just not sure if I'm doing it right lol...can someone help?
