When should I test? AF not due 10/17

Question

I have the most irregular cycle. With this being our first month ttc, my doctor suggested opk testing everyday after period to track when I ovulate.
I received LH surge on 10/3 in the evening, which is cd6. I anticipate I'm 1dpo.... not that  far into the tww. 
I have Early Response tests, so what days should I test? Should I start 10/12? 6 days before AF?

You ovulate 24-48 hours after your surge, and f your having irregular cycles your best bet might be to spend the extra bucks and get the digitals so you know for sure, I got my peak today and should test on the 18th. Idk if that helps you but usually 14 days after a peak

Try taking a test on the 14th and if you don’t get a positive try again a few days later.
