Childcare Workers: How Do You Deal?

I'm new to a childcare position; its been 2 months. I work in the 2 year old room. I thought I could handle it because my son is 2; I thought "same thing."  I was way wrong, lol. These kids wear me out! The constant crying, bickering, bad behavior. And to top it off my son is in the class and he's showing behavior I've never seen in him. Not sure if I can make it in the job, but I need my job. Any tips dealing with the craziness? Tips on working and disciplining my son while we are both in class? Majorly stressed out by it all.

I would possibly ask for a different class since your son is in that one. I worked in a daycare and my nephew was in my group of kids and it made things really difficult. But try to plan activities for the kids. Go on Pinterest and search for crafts and fun learning games.

I worked in daycare for 4 years and now I’m a nanny. But one of the main unwritten rules in childcare is to never work with the same age group as your child is. It causes so much stress to you because you’re working with 2 year olds and then have to go home to a 2 year old. Plus, working in the same room as your child is hard, my old bosses never let that happen because it made it more difficult for the mom and the kid to find a balance. I would talk to your directors about switching rooms. If that’s not possible just try to find a good way to treat him like all the other kids as hard as it may be. Now, your child aside, working in daycare is hard work, especially with 2 year olds. The best things I learned was to keep a pretty constant routine every day. I always did arrival, breakfast, potty/diaper time, story/song time, art/centers, outdoor time, potty/diapers, lunch, nap, wake up, snack, outdoors/centers, dismissal. It helps the kids know what’s going to happen and keeps them from being crazier. Also, transitions are important, when going from one thing to another make sure you make it fun: sing songs, dance, play music or make it a game. Especially with cleaning up. I find that as frustrating as it got, hey could read your emotions so easily and it makes them more crazy. Try to remain calm and happy as hard as it is. Ratios are a contributor too. i recently moved out of washington state where the toddler ration was a 1:7, and i was burnt out. done. didnt want to teach, it was too hard. im now a toddler teacher in oregon and the ratio is 1:4, like a breath of fresh air!! Try a different class/ age/ ratio. another thing is, maybe become a float/ support staff. still as vital to the center, but a less stressful role.
