Husband may or may not join the navy...advice?

So my husband has been thinking about joining the navy. We’re going to talk to a recruiter on Saturday. We’ve been together for 3 years and married for a year. We also have an 8 month old son. So I was just wondering if there are any navy wives here and if they can give me any advice. I have absolutely no problem with being alone and being away from him so I’m not too concerned about that. I just want to know if anyone out there can possibly let me know what to expect. Thanks!!

I could never handle that. My husband talks about his navy days a lot and I feel I'd get so depressed not seeing him for so long, and they had rotating shifts so you never had a consistent time you could call or anything. serious respect for those that make it work

He will be gone for basic for two months, only communication is letters, after that he will be sent to school for whatever his job may be A school is typically 6 months I believe. My husband is a submariner so before A school he had to go to a submariner school that was two months long. After school you will be stationed for 2-4 Years, since you are married you will receive BAH for housing (price varies depending on where you are stationed and how many children you have) we are in San Diego, we have one child and living in off base military housing, a two bedroom townhouse uses all of our BAH (about 2400 a month). Your partner will go on underways throughout the year which can last anywhere from 1 week- 2 months. There you will have little to no communication. Depending on his job and if he’s stationed on a ship or a sub like my husband deployments typically run 6-9 months. Be prepared to miss holidays, births, birthdays etc. you too are making a big sacrifice but the best you can do is stick by your husband and hold down the fort while he is away, support and encourage him. It will be tough on your children so you will be their emotional support as well.

My husband is in the navy & honestly the navy is a hard branch when it comes to family. Because even if they’re not deployed they’re still gone constantly for sea trials.

My hubs is in the Navy. We talked about him joining before he committed, and we were engaged soon after so he could show he was serious about me. Boot camp was hard with no communication but it didn’t help that my phone did SOMETHING every time he had an opportunity to call. He’s a nuke and so he went to A school and then Power school. He got picked up for an officers program before he could finish so when we got married I joined him in Oregon until he graduated and we moved to Charleston last year so he could keep doing the schools as an officer. He’s been in for 6 years now and has yet to be on a deployment (but that’s not typical!). We will be moving again around February or March when he will be assigned his sub. He’s hoping to get the subs that only have 3-4 month deployments because we have a baby due in January. It was also a tough decision deciding to have kids but ultimately I decided I was strong enough to be able to handle it on my own when he’s gone. The Navy is like a giant family and there are always people to help you. We are across the country from our family but I have been so blessed to make good friends everywhere we’ve been so far. Although he isn’t sure he will make a career out of it because of our family, I think we are both really glad he joined. It showed him how brilliant he actually is, and gave him a purpose because he had no idea what he wanted to do. Now he has ideas for what he may want to do outside of the Navy. We have been able to see different parts of the US that we may never have gone to, and as much as I hate change, I’ve had to face it head on which is good for me. I don’t regret being a navy wife one bit. We were long distance for a while before we got married and right now he’s on rotating shifts so I don’t see him too often with our schedules...but semper Gumby for life 😂 whatever you decide, know that you have a family away from your family waiting to take you in!!

Not Navy, but my husband is in the Marine Corps and it’s not a life we want for our daughter. We’ll be saying goodbye to the military next fall after 8 years in and we’re more than ready for it. It’s so much more than it being a challenging lifestyle. My husbands also a cop so he misses every holiday. The Navy especially is constantly coming and going. I have a friend whose husband is Navy and he’s maybe home a few months out of the year. He’s away more than he’s home. We also haven’t seen most of our family in over a year because we’re 3,000 miles from them. It’s not as horrible when you don’t have kids but the military honestly just isn’t as family friendly as some people say or believe it is. The financial security and full health insurance is nice and we appreciate it so much but that’s honestly the only thing good about it for us. We’ve moved 5 times in the 4 years we’ve been married and we’re exhausted at this point. Definitely not for everyone so have a VERY long and serious discussion about it first.

I'm not sure why he chose navy but it is hard to say the least my husband used to have a gf in the navy and they broke up cus she told him she'd hardly be home in 2 years. My husband is now a Marine and honestly support their choices yea it's hard and it's not for everyone but some men actually do do it to fight for our country and if your husbands doing it cus he's drivin to then have his back no matter what. Marines is different I see and hear from him while he's working daily a lot more once he finished boot camp and soi school. (5 months total) first 3 months only letters. He is getting deployed next year and I'm also having a baby right before but I love my husband and I am really so proud of him. We got 3 more years to go and he'll get deployed again before then but it'll be ok. The lifestyles not for everyone but the pride and long relationships and experiences your husband gains is truly some kind that only men/women in the military know. Good luck on your guys' decision!
