What does a contraction feel like?

I'm almost 33 weeks and have never experienced Braxton hicks or anything like that. Are they painful or does your abdomen just tighten up? I ask because I had the strangest sensation when I got in the shower earlier. My belly got ROCK hard for a minute or so.

I have them every other day. When I first started getting them, I just thought it was the baby balling up, but I told my dr about it and she said it was normal to have them every now and then as long as they're not regular. But they really just feel like my belly is superrr tight for about 15-30 seconds. They do not hurt and they shouldn't hurt. They are just uncomfortable.

My Braxton Hicks weren’t painful AT ALL and I’m a BABY... they felt I was squeezing my stomach muscles and contents as hard as I could but I actually had no control over it. My stomach just got really hard and slowly eased up. My real contractions I can’t even describe. I had bad rapid ones and was only 1 cm. I had an epidural RIGHT away....

I would say they are a more intense period cramp.
They do intensify when they get closer together but you will definitely notice then because it’s like a ring or cramps around your belly and into your back
