Cleaning baby's umbilical cord ?

No rude comments please , does my baby's umbilical cord look fine ? 
Also , do you / how do you ladies clean your baby's umbilical cord ? 
I hear girls say they clean it with a q-tip and alchohol however , I haven't cleaned my baby's umbilical cord because I heard if you don't wet it it will fall off sooner .

When my sons cord fell off, it hit the floor and before I could react my weenie dog ate it. He spent the next few days following us around, looking at the baby, whining and waiting for more tasty snacks to fall off of him. Not a helpful story but I thought I'd share anyway.

The alcohol dries it out. Use it to clean it up every time you change diaper and it will become routine til it falls off.

We were told to use alcohol because it helps the cord dry out.  They said DO NOT use any ointments that would keep it moist and keep it away from water.  If it does not fall off and stays on because it is kept moist, it will start smelling.  Alcohol is a drying agent so it makes perfect sense to use it on the cord.

They have cleaned umbilical cords with alcohol and qtips for years. Alcohol doesn't hurt as there are no nerve endings in the umbilical cord. They say now that there isn't any medically nececessary reason to, but I will do it with mine just because that's how everyone in my family has done for years.

Don't get it wet, it's meant to dry out. Just leave it alone. Yes it looks fine and normal.

Yes. It looks fine. And just don't mess it with, it will fall off on its own (this is what his pediatrician told us).

A q-tip and rubbing alcohol will keep it clean and keep it from getting infected. It also helps to dry it out so don't worry about the possibility of it being wet. Unless you pour a bunch of the alcohol on it (DON'T DO) it will only help the healing process. I have 3 boys and did this with each as directed by my midwife. She also said witch hazel is amazing for healing you after birth. Totally right. :)
