Advice on buying a used car?

Question

I'm 21 and wanting to buy a car for the first time. I've researched online a lot about getting an auto loan, buying used, and insurance but I'm looking for some outside advice on the process and what I should do and look for while I'm on the lot. 
I have new credit with a hospital bill I'm in the process of paying for
I bank with two different credit unions that I plan on going in to ask about an auto loan
I guess I'm needing advice on what I should be expecting when I go in to the bank and to a couple car lots tomorrow

as the fiancé of a mechanic, here's our advice. 1, take a mechanic with you to look over the car. a lot of used car sellers hide or gloss over problems the car has. a good mechanic will alert you to any problems. 2, test drive it. if anything sounds or feels off, trust your gut. 3, do your research on the most common problems associated with the car you are looking at. what's the average amount you'll spend on a tune up? what do brake pads and spark plugs cost? is it foreign or domestic? these things make a huge difference. be aware that if the car comes with high maintenance costs, you need to budget for that.

there is so much I can give advice on! instead I'm going to start with posting a link for you to read through. start with the dealer scams. then read through the buying used guide. it is seriously so beneficial. I used this guide 3 years ago when buying a new civic and it saved me a ton of trouble and it saved me a couple thousand dollars. Make sure whatever car you are looking at for purchase that they have the car facts on it so you can see if it's been in an accident and so forth
