toy for 1 yr old?

please help! 
I'm gonns be a ftm in december, so no experience. even with my niece and nephew. what toys would a 1 year old girl like? our friend's daughter turns 1 this weekend and we don't know what gift to get her. the mom says she doesn't have much to play with so we are going for a toy. we don't want the possibility of accidentally out doing the parents so keeping it cheap. 
I know my niece loved baby dolls. not sure if thats pretty common. 
what does your 1 year old love that keeps them occupied for a bit?

I think anything that lights up and sings is a winner. My one year old loves his shopping cart by Melissa and Doug.  Random but he likes to push it around.  It's sold on Amazon.

My little girl loves me playing with her Wee Baby Stella baby doll made by Manhatten Toy. The doll has a magnetic pacifier so she likes pretending to give the baby her paci. I think they are only $20. She also loves the little people figurines and her doll house.
