toy for 1 yr old?

please help!

I'm gonns be a ftm in december, so no experience. even with my niece and nephew. what toys would a 1 year old girl like? our friend's daughter turns 1 this weekend and we don't know what gift to get her. the mom says she doesn't have much to play with so we are going for a toy. we don't want the possibility of accidentally out doing the parents so keeping it cheap.

I know my niece loved baby dolls. not sure if thats pretty common.

what does your 1 year old love that keeps them occupied for a bit?
