Choking??

Question

When do you start giving your baby chunks of food? Im extremly afraid of choking so i still blend all his food, especially cause im home alone with him most of the day and im scared i wont know how to react if he starts to chok. Any advice? What do you moms do?

Google baby heimlich so that you feel prepared, but just start with really small bits of soft things & progress from there. We've been giving our baby bits since he started solids at 6mo.

Baby led weaning since 6 months. There is a difference between choking and gagging. My daughter is now an excellent eater

Start slow . You can offer those puffs because they melt. Start with soft things like steamed carrots or baked sweet potatoes. Cut into little tiny bites. Soft toast with butter or pancakes. I started with puree as well but at around seven months started slowly doing finger foods now at eight months my daughters eats all kinds of foods meatballs, chicken, scrambled eggs, baked apples. I would recommend taking an infant CPR class and for now until then YouTube What to do if a baby is choking.

take an infant CPR class, every parent should know what to do just in case. For me, my daughter eats right off my plate. always has. I just make sure things are small enough for her to eat. nothing crunchy, nothing overly thick. Her meats get minced, or pulled (like pulled pork or chicken.) The few times she did choke (if I don't catch her gagging in time to make her stop, she'll choke. If I catch her she'll stop facing and eat normal. she's weird.) I was able to help her because it wasn't really choking. infant CPR is very important to know and ALWAYS infinitely better to take a class on than reading up on or watching a video of. They are fairly cheap too, and in some cases free.

Take a CPR course. There was a study that showed that babies can choke with puréed food just as they can choke with larger pieces. Also know that choking and gagging are not the same things.

We started giving him pieces of food around 4-5 months. He did choke at one point but I gave him a few back blows he coughed it up and was fine. I'm a nurse so I have BLS training. There are classes everywhere I know the hospitals in my area offer them.

I actually feel more comfortable with bigger pieces of food. If she bites off a chunk that's too big, she spits it out. Our child health nurse says real chocking is silent, gagging and coughing sounds are normal and not a worry.
