Changing insurance while pregnant

Ki

So my husband and I buy our health insurance. Currently we have Kaiser and they’ve been good. We pay $450/month to cover myself, my husband, and our son. The prenatal care has been pretty great, but nothing exceptional or outstanding. We still have copays at the ER for $200 and lab copays of $10, which aren’t a huge deal but wtf am I covered for?

Today, I met with a billing person to discuss our copay for delivery. Turns out we will need to pay a $2000 deposit 3 weeks prior to our due date. 😳

We are due February 28th, 2018. Which means we can switch insurance if necessary since it is now open enrollment time. We saw that our premium for the current plan we’re on is going from $450/month to $590/month for the 3 of us, not factoring in the baby yet. So that’ll probably be more $650?

Just wondering if anyone has ever switched insurances while pregnant? I want to try and find plan that doesn’t nickel and dime us for everything, especially when we pay a hefty amount every month. If so, how far along were you? Did you dread changing your birth plans? Etc.

*we tried to apply for medi-cal/Medicare and didn’t qualify.

Also, please don’t turn this into a political debate because we won’t hear the end of it from either side.
