Is he ashamed of me?

I've been with my man for 5 months, and I still haven't met his friends. Whenever there's an opportunity like a party or gathering, he always finds a way for me not to come or not to meet them. 
 
He said about a month ago "you're never meeting my friends friends because they'll say embarrassing stuff about me" but I feel like that's just an excuse. 
 
 I feel like he loves me when it's him and me, but ashamed of me when I'm around his friends. Any theories?

A real man loves to show his woman off . I get sometimes there are guy nights , but when a man is with you ... they are proud to be with you and will be more happy to be surrounded by the woman he adores and his friends . Sounds like a little boy to me

I was with my boyfriend that’s now my ex for 6 months, & he barely brought me around family.. and he got a new job and made friends, I never met them, then I found out he cheated on me with a girl that’s supposed to be 100% lesbian, that’s what he kept telling me, they looked so much alike it was kinda gross. 
But not all guys are the same. Talk to him about it, tell him how it’s making you feel. If it doesn’t change drop his ass and get a guy who gladly let you meet his friends and won’t be beating around the bush with that stupid shit

I don't think 5 months is too long to not meet friends. But if it's something that you've made clear you want to happen and it's not then I would definitely wonder why. It would make me wonder who these friends are (like if he hooks up with them or something like that) if you can't meet them, or if I was the side chick. Not to say it's something bad like that for sure. He really could just be embarrassed of what they might say. Maybe they're not so respectful of relationships. I've definitely had bfs in the past who's friends would talk about openly about my bfs past relationships/experiences or ones that are super awkward and immature with their jokes. 
Have you straight up told him you want to meet them and think it's weird that he doesn't introduce you? I was once dating a guy who always wanted to stay in, cook and watch movies. I thought it was because he didn't want to be seen it with me for whatever reason and when I asked it was much different than I expected. He just really preferred to relax and stay in and when he went out it was friends/family dragging him out. When I explained what I thought and mentioned I enjoyed getting out of the house to do things he immediately changed it.

maybe he has a side you haven't seen of him that he has when he's with his friends? or his friends are crazy and have pushed his past girlfriends away?
