My thoughts on morning sickness & HG

Ashley • Mama to 3 ☺️

I always considered myself the type of woman who could handle blood or seeing "gross" things and prided myself in not having the gag reflex, but that all changed soon after it was confirmed that I was indeed pregnant!

I have experienced it since 5 weeks.

Currently 20 weeks, 3 days and was still vomiting as of yesterday. Still having major taste aversions and sensitivity to all odors in the air. If I do throw up, it is almost always in the morning now and there is consistent to occasional nausea all day. It's actually getting better...slowly but surely. Lately I will go 2 or 3 days without vomiting and feel like a champ but then it strikes again and usually with a vengeance. On a positive note, our baby boy has been perfectly healthy every time we go to the doctor and we feel really blessed for this. This mama is just suffering sickness so baby boy can be the healthiest he can be! 😂 Like I have a choice. After doing the research, I would say that I had a touch of HG (Hyperemesis Gravidarum) at one point and only 1 in 50 pregnant women experience nausea past 20 weeks or throughout their entire pregnancy. There were several times when dehydration gave me the shakes and migraines came on causing me to leave work. I probably should have gone to the hospital but I always try to do things the natural way if I can and my husband was there to take good care of me as I confined myself to a dark bedroom, covered in Vicks Vapor rub and cold wet rags, propped up in bed with Gatorade on the bedside table for electrolytes and prayers that I could just "sleep it off." It was getting to where I could not even keep prenatal vitamins down, or ginger ale for that matter and loud noises, bright lights, stressful arguments and people's breath were causing me to throw up in my mouth and send me running to the nearest sink, trash can, toilet or plastic container I had available in my car! Just driving or walking to the mailbox and getting motion sickness was overwhelming.

I took some Zofran prescribed by my Doctor for nausea after literally trying EVERYTHING, however I quit taking that too because there is conflicting research on whether it can cause birth defects or not. Seems that there just aren't enough solutions out there for women who experience this type of sickness during pregnancy. My only hope is that it does get better, is a temporary time in life and there will be a beautiful reward at the end of the process.
