Talking yet?

Question

My baby boy was born July 4th 2016 and is not talking yet. He understands us and sometimes will babble back. He says mama but not directly to me, more like I'm sad or need something. I'm not sure if we should be worried because I know all kids develop different.

My baby was born 4th of July as well, she’s has said any word yet just babbles. Went for hearing assessment yesterday but the test was inconclusive, going back in six weeks

I was a late talker (after 2), my older daughter was a late talker (after 2), and my older son was a super early talker (before 1).  My younger daughter (6/28/16) is somewhere in between.  She mostly babbles and has about 6-8 words and some sign language.  Her comprehension is great.   
I really think kids just develop at different rates.  For example, while my older daughter was a late talker, she was a super early walker.  And when she finally did talk it was so sudden — clear as a bell and in complete sentences.

I have just posted a poll for this exact thing.our son is 18 months end of December. exactly like your son in the way he says mama but. only when crying and it's not cause he's looking for me or can only be comforted by me. he has a excellent understanding of everything we say or ask him to do but just now words. I also don't know whether to start a speech therapist or whether need just too young.

My girl was born the 4th of July too!! She babbles a lot she says some words and will answer questions but in her own babble lol I think its perfectly fine! We just had her check up and the doctor didn’t seem concerned at all

Mine says tons of words but I don’t think you need to worry yet- it’s still early and he may have a big spurt at sometime soon when he starts to say a lot more.

My son born June 28th only talks when he wants lol.  He says "Dada" but dada means everything. He says "Mom" when he REALLY is upset and he can say Dog. He says Grandma and bottle and diaper (but only when he wants to) He babbles all the day long and only says those things while being coaxed. SOMETIMES. if he's not talking by 2 I'll bring him to a speech therapist but reading to him has severely helped in his interest in talking :)

I think the proactive approach is to get a referral for speech therapy. My friend did at 18 months BC her son had no words either... and after just 2 weeks of therapy he progressed tremendously. Now he’s 3 and talks up a storm!
So yes you can take a wait and see approach, but for peace of mind and for the benefit of your babes, just get the therapy. They’ll let you know where he is in terms of comprehension, vs expressive speech, and give you tools so he doesn’t fall behind

My baby was born on the 11th and she just say a few words. If she's not talking by 18 months I will get her a referral.
