Overreacting or just punishment?

In the parenting subreddit there is a mother who posted that her 11 year old son stole 20$ from a local community charity and then lied to her about it. When she found out the truth and the child admitted it she told him that his Christmas was cancelled and all his toys would go to a children’s charity. I think she made a good call- Christmas presents are not a right they are a privilege and children who steal shouldn’t be showered with gifts. Everyone on reddit thinks she overreacted and that she should give the gifts back to the son and make him do house work to earn back the 20$ he stole (he should do that either way) but what do you think? Does the punishment fit the crime?
