When has your milk supply been established?

Amanda

I’m 4 weeks pp and have been exclusively pumping since we returned home from the hospital. I was initially pumping after every feeding but found myself so exhausted from the endless cycle of feed, pump, try to sleep, repeat 12 times a day that I went down to an 8 pumps per day schedule. My baby is now feeding about 9-10 times a day. I power pump twice a day. I also take goat’s rue four times a day at my lactation consultant’s recommendation (due to a thyroid condition I was told fenugreek is off the table). Even with the 8 sessions, power pumps, and herbal supplement I only produce about 20 ounces each day. We supplement with formula as needed. I will be returning to work in January and will be trying to keep up with the 8 pumps per day schedule but I don’t know that I will realistically be able to do so in my work environment. I’m trying to dig deep here and keep up my motivation for pumping because I know our baby can benefit from any amount of breast milk but it feels like so much time and effort for only 20 ounces. Is this it as far as supply goes or is there a chance that it could still get a little better? I honestly think that what I’m doing now is all I can reasonably handle day to day. I simply can’t pump any more. I want my baby to benefit from breast milk but I’m having a really hard time staying motivated when it feels like the pay out is never enough. How are you other mamas in similar situations dealing with this? Is this the best supply I can ever expect? Should I just be happy with what I’m getting and not stress out over what we lack? Did those of you who pumped after returning to work experience a diminished supply at all? Thanks in advance everyone!
