Who is at fault

Question

Say you work at a resturant as a Host/counter person/bus person (job says host but you did everything). You are supposed to bus tables. Your shift ends at 3. At 2:30 your manager asks you to do a task that someone who was fired usually does, and you've never done. They ask you to stay a half hour later to finish it.  You do the task and complete it by the time you they asked you to.  However, because you weren't bussing the tables they were completely dirty and piled with plates because the counter person left a trainee to do all the work.  You get into a fight with the counter persin for leaving the trainee to do all the work and they say it's your fault because you're the bus person. You say it's not because your shift ended over half an hour ago and you only stayed to complete the task the manager asked. Who is in the wrong?

If the manager asked you to do another job during that last half an hour, they are responsible for making sure someone else covered your hosting duties during that time.

Well did the host inform the counter person that they were doing the other task? Personally I don’t think I’d just leave my job to hope someone else would do it. I’d do the task I was asked to do but I’d inform the counter person as well as the trainee and I’d try to help out the trainee.

The manager. He/she should have sorted things so everyone knew that you were doing something else and had technically finished doing the regular bit of your job.l and ensured that someone was doing it. Bad communication.

The manager should have told the other person that the host was doing another task and to make sure to be busing tables in that time.

you were pulled off of your job to do a different one. your job is now the problem of the manager. he (or she) needed to communicate with whoever necessary to have that last half hour of your job covered. (unless the manager told you you had to complete both before you left but that is not how it sounds). And, whatever happens in the 30 minutes that you were technically supposed to be off the clock shouldn't be your problem.
