I recently started back to school for a new career (33 years old) because I didnt want to keep doing hair forever. I was proud of myself for going back to school and making positive changes. But since I did, I've had 2 separate people tell me that I'm pathetic and need to grow up. This last one said its funny that I am changing careers because I was a horrible stylist. I'm starting to feel pretty worthless. If those things weren't true, then I wouldnt be hearing it from two different people, right?

I had quite a few people who were 40+ in my nursing program. Even one woman who was 55. They all came back to school from other careers. I say if you know what you want to do DO IT! It takes a brave person to make a career move like that! I'm giving you props, the people who make rude comments are probably jealous that they will be doing hair forever!

Don't listen to it. You are trying to better yourself and they're threatened by that. You go get that career and don't let anyone bring you down or make you feel worthless! You're bettering your life, you're making yourself worth MORE than you were before and they can't handle it. Jealousy at its finest.

Sounds like sour grapes to me. Lots of people go back to school and make career changes for a zillion different reasons. That's the beauty of having freedom to choose what we do with our lives. I got my bachelor's in pharma 10 years ago, only worked as a pharmacist for 5 years. I was gonna go back to work when my kids went to school but I just wasn't interested in it anymore. So I started a housecleaning business 4 years ago and have had 3 ppl working for me since 2013 because I had a reputation as a honest hard worker and ended up with more clients then I could handle alone. Now I'm 32,still working the business, but I'm also back in college for nursing this time. It's perfectly normal for people's desires and interests to change as we get older. I say kudos to you for going after what you want instead of settling for the supposedly "safe & responsible" career you no longer enjoyed!

They're jealous. Lots people switch career at your age, you've still got over 30 years of work left. Don't let them put you down, it's brave what youre doing. Enjoy it
