Would you still have kids if.....?

Question

Would you still have biological children if you had a fatal hereditary disease (you will more than likely die young and in a very slow, painful, manner) that would have more or less a 50% chance of being passed on to your child? A close friend of the family passed away 3 years ago and her natural children are currently getting tested. I don't think there's much a debate on it but figured it'd spark some sort of a discussion maybe.

I wouldn’t have children in any sort of way. They don’t deserve to bury their mom at such a young age.

I not only wouldn’t have biological children, I also wouldn’t adopt. Who wants to give a child a family only to rip it from them at a young age? I’m not that selfish.

If I have a huge chance of dying a slow painful death while still young, I wouldn’t adopt or bring any kids in my life. No reason to have them get attached only to leave them and have them see me suffer.

Probably not. But can’t you also see a geneticist to consider the risks and then further test embryos prior to implanting to see if the possess certain genes? I’d look into that if it were important to me.

Well I do for the most part, and I’m considering having kids so. I have always wanted kids, it’s now that I’m skeptical about having them, but I always wanted them regardless of my SC.

I am a carrier for a syndrome but it does not affect me health. It does affect my children though. I have a healthy son and I have an angel baby who passed last week. I can say that no one should even think they have any clue what they would do in the situation if it is not their life. It’s disturbing to me that people even feel the need to voice their opinion or call others selfish for their choices when it comes to things like this. This post is unnecessary.

A friend’s sister had a child who died under age two from a genetic disease that always kills very young. Her insurance paid for genetic embryo testing so she and her husband could have two children that weren’t affected.

No. Not unless I could afford to throw thousands away on IVF that can screen out the unhealthy embryos. I am having a biological child right now, but I still want to adopt in the future. Adoption isn't second place to a genetic child anyway, so I don't know why someone would risk it.

I wouldn’t have kids, adopt or any other thing. Let’s check out of life early (not by choice) but bring another person in the world to witness it, and also go through it? Kind of selfish in a way. Kids who watch their parents die usually need serious therapy

Maybe this isn’t quite the same but it really helped shape my decision. My family has a very, very strong history of several different types of cancer (strong as in every member of my family for the past two generations has had some type of cancer). I made the decision for myself that I’m going to adopt children because it is scary enough for me to know I’ll most likely get cancer and I don’t want to put that on a child.
