Anyone else hyphenating or using both last names?

Question

Please only respond if you are planning on hyphenating or have used both last names before. We are planning on using my last name and his. First of all I was born in Poland and being the only girl in the only one with my last name so if my child doesn't have it then it will be gone forever so it's a huge deal to me however the last name with both of ours will be 16 letters long! Why did you decide to do it and how has it worked out for you?

You could consider, making yours or his last name the middle name and then the other name being the actual last name. That is how my parents did my name.
.... But keep in mind that growing up your child's last names will be cut off on most documents etc. As only so many letters are allowed so the very last name will usually be cut in half or completely off on alot of stuff.

My last name is hyphenated and I hate it. I have my moms last name and my dads. The only thing I can say is if you do hyphenate be sure to always use the hyphenated name. It caused so much confusion and grief for me the older I became because sometimes when I was younger my mom would sign me up for things under one last name, not both. Even my drivers license only had one last name which caused a mess for me. I won't do it to my children because it was a pain for me but like I said if you do please please please use the child's entire last name for everything you sign them up for and etc. Sorry for such a long response! When we got married we both made my last name our middle names. So now all or children, and us, will have the same middle and last name 😊

My kids have hyphenated last names and I did when I was married and I never had a problem with it. Their last name is 11 letters long and my baby in the making is also going to have a hyphenated last name, I have never experienced a problem with it so do what you feel is right. Who cares what other people think.

Yes! I never changed my last name and our daughter's last name is hyphenated. 10 letters all together and both last names are relatively common and easy to pronounce and spell. We decided to have mine be the first name simply because it sounds better that way.

I have a few friends who grew up with hyphenated last names and people often referred to them by the initials of their last name - for example Jessica AM. Worked for them!

When I got married, I added his name to mine, but didn't hyphenate. My legal last name is 13 characters including the space between, and I haven't had any trouble fitting it on legal documents.

(I did this so I can keep working under my maiden name and use my married name outside of work. Keeps my patients from finding me on social media. Baby is just getting my married name).

16 letters for a lastname is VERY long.... Most forms doesn't have space enough.... So you will have always problems with completing forms... a live long problem.... Every time you have to sign something - you have to do it with your 16 letters... Just do it at home with some forms... and you'll see how it looks - every Credit Card purchase you need to sign with such long name...  Better to find a compromise NOW. Consider although if your polish name can be pronounced easily for everyone.... at every time.... A friend of mine choose to take this name: Kagermeier-Cesak ..... 1 year after her marriage she regretted it... Most people don't get it which name is the correct one.... and they use just one of them. But the most  difficult thing IS in fact that ALL forms don't have space enough.... Please sit down an FIND a compromise!!! Think of your children who have to live with your decision.... What if they will be married - which name will they choose??? Make a wisely decision!
