How do you detect a rental scam?

We looked at a place today and supposedly the owner lives out of state. We did an application fee, $80. $40 per person. But we’ve not given money for anything else yet. 
What are some signs you’ve been scammed?

Anything where you can’t schedule a time to go view the inside of the property before hand is a huge no go for me. The fact they live out of state is even bigger. Even being out of state they should have a property manager or someone they know available to do tours, finalize paperwork, and hand over keys. I’d watch your accounts especially if part of your application was dob and social. I also find it weird each of you had to submit an application fee. I know everywhere is different, but any realty company or individual we’ve rented with has had one application fee and an added $5 for additional people since basically the application is running a background/Credit check and finding renter’s history.

I would look for people renting their properties through agencies if you’re worried. Application fees of $40 are typical in my area

Was it through an agency? We rented a place with an out of state owner and had to pay an application fee, but it was managed by a property management company with an office nearby.

My husband and I have out of town rental property but we ALWAYS have someone on hand that can show our property. We also have an account set up for deposit just for the rent.
