Is homework harmful or helpful?

Harmful. I mean do you actually learn anything from homework? If you're in school for hours on end, shouldn't that teach you what you "need" to learn? I've learned 1,000,000 x more things (and useful things) from a podcast called "stuff you should know" (go check it out) than I have in my four years of high school so far. The school system that we have now is archaic and stifling to creativity and a passion for learning. Sure, I'm anti-establishment, but I know a lot of people who agree.

Depends on the work load. If you have like 2-3+ assignments in for the end of the week then it's horrible. You are way to stressed about getting it all finished on time that you aren't learning anything. 
Personally, there's only some homework I'm given that actually helps, and that's the vocab I'm given for my Italian class for tests.

Harmful. Things aren't how they used to be, people will whip out their phones and get the answers. Done in 2 minutes.

I think it depends. When my kids were in kindergarten and 1st grade I was honestly shocked at the amount of homework they brought home everyday on top of the required reading it would take up pretty much all their time in the afternoon. This year wasn't so bad. They still had a lot of homework but we're required to do only as much as they could complete in 30 minutes a day and then their reading. Made it much less stressful on all of us. I think, for younger kids especially, it's overload to have them in a classroom 8 hours a day and then expect them to come home and fight through another couple hours of paperwork. Even in college most of my homework was reading and prep for next days work, not repeating pages and pages of the same work I'd been doing all day. Younger kids need time to unwind, get out in the sunshine and play and be kids or they'll burn out fast.

Helpful, but there's just SO much of it that it can be harmful. 
When you take 5 AP classes, and each class has some sort of blog/paper/journal due each week, as well as smaller assignments, and then you have to study for tests (and the AP test!), and you have all of your responsibilities outside of school.... It can be overwhelming.

Granted I'm 32 & things may have changed, but when I was in HS and college my daily homework assignments were almost always reading to prepare for the next class or answering questions to practice what we learned in the previous class. We'd also have papers and tests, but we knew well in advance and I considered the daily homework as studying and preparing for the tests.
