Period Sex

So the guy I'm seeing (and myself) have decided and agreed that it's time we take it to the next step...Sex. We live 2 hours apart (I'm in Baltimore, he's in Jersey) but still make time to see each other generally every other weekend. We planned to get together on the 24th but according to the all knowing eve, I will be starting my period that day. I told my guy that and firmly said "heck no!" and he said he didn't mind period sex. Ladies.. this is our FIRST sex weekend. I've NEVER had sex on my period but I hear it can be better than when you're off your period..also never been with a guy who didn't mind. Do I go ahead and try it or suggest a different weekend??
