Maternity pay entitlement help please!!

So I’ve just started a new job and I’m TTC but my OH wants to hold on until we’re sure that I can be entitled to statutory maternity pay. I’ve just read this online but neither of us can get our heads around it! My brain just won’t work it out 😂😂 can anyone help??
