Islam teachings?

Hello I’m Muslim but have been raised without anyone really religiously teaches me my belief. Now that I’m older I’m in a relationship with someone who is catholic. From time to time I get comments from my s/o’s family that really hurt me. Some asking if my religion really adheres to the Sharia law as they do in the middle eastern countries (In my country, only one province does that but it’s kind of frowned upon since it’s so harsh). Some believes it’s primitive and that the women are treated like objects. I’ve been raised in a household that shows Islam as a peaceful and forgiving religion. The women are treated with respect and if anything they’re the power of the household.

How can I show them that it really is a peaceful religion? I just tell them they should read the Quran and not the social media and angry opposers.

Also what do you guys think about sharia law and extremists and people now a days talking about bringing the next holocaust? It saddens me to see anyone bashing any religion. Religion really is a beautiful thing I respect all of them. And of course I know there are extremist in each of them.
