UPDATE: Potty training my two year old
* please read updates and let me know if you’ve been through this and have any advice *
Just started potty training my just turned two year old - doing a modified version of the three day method. Today was day one. We had two accidents and everything else made it in the potty. We even had a poop. But I basically spent all day in the bathroom. Or running back to the bathroom. Ever time I sat down to nurse my seven week old I ended up running to the potty and finishing nursing in the bathroom waiting for my two year old to go. My back hurts and I’m exhausted. Hoping this works. I will tackle night training some other time. Wish me luck tomorrow!
Update: No accidents on day 2. We still had a few occasions where we sat on the potty for what felt like FOREVER waiting, but not as many. I found it helped if I walked away after a few minutes. I think she was using it as a way to get more attention now that the baby is here so she was refraining from going, but if I walked away it seemed to help move things along. We even left the house for a quick outing with no accidents and she went pee while we were out (it was at her preschool literacy fair so it was perfect because they have tiny little toilets and it was a place she is familiar with).
Update 2: day 3 had me questioning if she was ready. She only had one accident, but she gets so upset after her accidents. She was also really struggling with releasing her urine. I think she is trying so hard not to have an accident that she is having a hard time going. She even stayed dry when I put a diaper on her for nap time, but woke up having to pee and being really upset. We ended up putting her potty chair in the bathtub and run the warm water. She was able to pee and was so pleased with herself. She has always been a perfectionist (even as an infant she would do something once, like roll over, and then not do it again for a long time until she could do it perfectly). I’m worried that it’s going to give her a complex. I sent her back to preschool today. I asked if she wanted to pee in the potty or in her diaper and she said potty, so I’m giving her another day. Hopefully being in a different environment with other kids who are potty training helps. If not then maybe I’ll go back to diapers and try again when she is less stressed. Thoughts?
