should I ask him to prom?

I've been talking to a guy for around 5 months now and in that time we've become very close friends. I won't deny that I have feelings for him, but when we first started talking he told me he doesn't feel the same way, and I respect that. prom is at the end of next month. he is a grade below me, so the only way he can go is if someone asks him. I want to know if I should ask him to go with me, just as friends. we've only ever had 2 conversations with each other In person, but that's just because I had to leave school for personal reasons. however, we talk on the phone every day. if I don't ask someone, I'll be the only one of my friends going without somebody. I feel like he and I would have fun, I'm just nervous and need opinions. thanks guys!
