Tampon strings?

This is a weird situation so I’ll do my best to explain it. I was 11 when I got my first period, and 15 when they put me on birth control pills to stop my period. I was getting really sick and my cramps kept me home from school almost all week. I’m 20 now and my pills were changed, so I’m back to having a period every month. It’s been about 4 years since I’ve had a period so this weird for me. I used to only use pads because that’s all my mom would buy for me. Now that I’m an adult, I’m starting to use tampons for like the first time and it’s weird.

I guess my question is, how to you not get pee on the tampon string? Are you supposed to hold it out of the way? I know it sounds stupid but please help a girl out.
