Have you ever had an experience where you were afraid while traveling?

Was it in your country or another? What happened?

Jamaica. My sister got married on the beach there. We left the resort once -yeah, just once, to go sight seeing. Well, we had to go through the town to get to the cars. It was like a ghetto, people were constantly asking you weird questions, and at one point we watched a local woman get punched in a nearby street and get yanked by her hair by some guy. It was a pretty place besides that, but I'm not going back.

I've never been out of country. The only time I don't feel safe is travelling at night or in the snow/ice.

The time I felt least safe due to weather was moving to Colorado Springs. ER had to drive over LA Vera pass.... it's horrible. Hundreds of feet in drop offs, winding roads, steeproads. It was snowing so hard we couldn't see anything around us. We drove about 20mph through the pass. A 3 hour trip took us about 7. We made it alive though

Can't you ask for a gun at the U.S. Embassy? Everytime we went to colombia we had to. That was when violence was as how mexico is right now.

Only once. I was 16, flying from Boston to Stockholm by myself to visit a childhood friend from Sweden, who had moved back. On the first leg of the flight, which stopped over in Iceland, I was sitting in the window seat when I felt a hand reach over and grope my thigh while I was trying to sleep. The guy was old enough to be my dad (and was another American,) and I was scared. I buzzed the flight attendant and asked to move seats, and luckily there was another seat open, because I am afraid to think of what he may have done.

Mazatenango, Guatemala. We went to visit Mazatenango and just the month prior to our visit, an American man was kidnapped and held hostage. He was targeted almost immediately. They asked for money and got it, but killed him anyway. I was afraid I'd be an easy target as well since I obviously don't look like I'm from Mazatenango...I slept lightly that night. Decided it was best we move on the next morning.

I felt safe for the most part in every other part we visited. Especially the ones filled with other tourists that were visiting!

I travel a lot and the place I've been most terrified is my home country, the USA - thanks to the gun laws (or lack thereof). It's the only place I've ever worried about getting shot.

I'm traveling to Lebanon with my husband in a few weeks. I'm already scared because the situation of the surrounding countries is causing tension. My husband is watching local news like a hawk to make sure nothing kicks off.

I once got swept up in a fast moving mob at a Halloween party in a college town I was visiting. A fight broke out and the cops showed up and the packed crowd scattered. It felt like undertow in the ocean. I grabbed my friend and wouldn't let go so we didn't get separated. We lost our other friend for about an hour and a half but he was ok and we met him back at his cousin's house.

Other than that, I haven't had any really scary experiences. Except for accidentally squatting on a spider web in a toilet in India. 😶😶😶

I have only once when visiting Mexico City and there were demonstrations taking place which got quite heated and spread to where I was - all of a sudden my friend and I were surrounded by police marching in on one side and demonstrators on the other. Very scary!

Philippines - 1st time in the Philippines when leaving the airport a man came & forcefully tried to steal my luggage from me. Then, when leaving the country, I got detained by security for well over an hr because I had a keychain in the shape of a bullet (courtesy of my brother who bought it for me as a gift on his Marine base).  They kept asking me why I had weapons?!? Hello, it's a keychain! Anyway, they threatened to put me on some kind of watch list & that scared me. Been there like 8x since then & no problems since.

France - got stuck in the airport in France overnight once. I was so exhausted, but I couldn't allow myself to sleep in the crazy uncomfortable chairs because these kind of suspicious looking group of guys kept changing seats to sit closer & closer to me as the night went on. Made me super paranoid.

Brazil - a 2 hr layover in Brazil turned into a 36 hr layover due to weather & mechanical issues. I don't speak Portuguese & no one spoke English. I didn't understand the food. I didn't have a visa, so I had to stay in this little glassed in area for all this time w/ no way to get a hold of my company or family (no wifi). It was more miserable than scary I guess, but the paranoia of falling asleep & having my stuff stolen took a toll on me.
